Maryam Al-SABAWI is a grade 11 student at St Andre Besette Catholic school. She was a friend of Yumnah’s. (Yumnah Afzaal)
She is a founder of YCCI – the youth coalition combatting Islamophobia. Maryam and her friends have been busy organizing many different events and projects that are meant to honour their friend Yumnah and help fight Islamophobia. Amongst those projects is an education package that commemorates June 6, 2021, that has been used in London schools, as well as a short documentary entitled: To Yumnah with Love, and the one year anniversary march that started at Oakridge public school, as well as an important meeting with the prime minister to discuss what can be done to fight Islamophobia.
During Covid, She co-founded a non-profit organization called tutors who care – where she and others provide free services to children who can’t afford tutoring.
Maryam has also travelled to Bosnia, Turkey and Ecuador on different humanitarian trips. She is an advocate for those who are less fortunate.
She launched a campaign to sponsor 300 orphans in Bosnia after she spent a few weeks working with them one summer.
Maryam also coaches girls junior and senior basketball teams.
Maryam enjoys serving the community.
She is an avid public speaker. Recently, she made it to the world finals for the optimist international oratorical contest.
